Fix the air traffic controller shortage and put more controllers in towers.
The clearest numerical delivery among recent Cabinet promises. The FAA beat its FY2025 hiring target, bringing in 2,028 controllers against a goal of 2,000, its highest total since 2008, and reached 94% of its FY2026 goal by August 2026 — roughly 11,000 controllers in service, the highest staffing level in six years, aided by a hiring process shortened by more than five months and a 30% starting-salary increase. Part of the surge came from an unconventional April 2026 campaign recruiting video gamers. The real caveat: certification takes up to two years and historically only a small fraction of applicants complete training, so hires are not yet certified controllers, and the FAA separately lowered its long-term staffing target from 14,633 to 12,563. The initial 2025 plan drew joint praise from both the Republican chair and Democratic ranking member of the House Transportation Committee.
