Shut down the U.S. Department of Education and return education authority to the states.
An executive order directing McMahon to facilitate the department's closure 'to the maximum extent' legally possible was signed in March 2025, and large parts of its functions, including student loans and career and technical education, have since moved to other agencies. But the department still legally exists and continues to run core programs like Title I, since fully abolishing it requires an act of Congress that has not happened.
